John Brother Cade Jr. was born on the campus of Prairie View A&M University, Texas, to John B. Cade Sr. and Jessie Mae Maben Cade. He attended Southern University Laboratory High School and later graduated from Southern University. Cade taught at McKinley High School in Baton Rouge, La., between 1961 and 1964.
